Park Beach Manor Tenants United!
In March 2024, tenants of Park Beach Manor at 1925 Nelson Street received notice that their building had been acquired by a new landlord, Plan A Real Estate Services. Since the change in ownership, tenants have experienced intimidation, harassment, covert surveillance, and continuous threats from Plan A and its owner Anoop Majithia.
The tenants have formed the Park Beach Tenants Collective (PBTC) to inform and protect each other!
On June 11, the PBTC visited their landlord at his offices to deliver a collective letter of demands to stop the unjust evictions & harassment of our neighbours. You can watch the whole rally on the VTU instagram page. Several news outlets also covered the rally and interviewed tenants of the PBTC: Global News, CTV News, City News
During the 1 hour long rally PBTC tenants, VTU members, and neighbours from the West End and across Vancouver showed their support to the PBTC. The tenants delivered a letter of demands to Anoop Majithia who chose not to face and speak to his own tenants.
The situation at Park Beach has only worsened in recent months. Multiple Park Beach tenants are currently facing bogus evictions while some are defending against a civil defamation lawsuit filed by Plan A. The landlord has informed tenants of incoming additional rent increases for capital expenditures and is making almost daily intrusions into tenants' lives. If that wasn't enough, tenants recently discovered a hidden camera in the laundry room that was surveilling them without their knowledge.
This has to stop.
As the situation has evolved, so too have the tenants’ demands. The Park Beach Tenants Collective are making the following demands of Plan A so that they may peacefully enjoy their homes:
1. END THE EVICTIONS, DROP THE LAWSUIT
Plan A must withdraw each and every eviction notice filed against Park Beach tenants. Plan A must immediately withdraw the defamation lawsuit filed against Park Beach tenants.
2. PROTECTION FOR GENEVIÈVE and DODI
Withdraw the eviction notice against Geneviève and allow her to continue living with her dog, Dodi. Park Beach Manor is Dodi’s home too and Plan A must confirm that Dodi, and all other tenant pets, are welcome to stay in their homes as they were allowed to under the previous ownership.
3. CONFIRM MARIE AND PETE’S TENANCY STATUS
Plan A must cease its misrepresentations over Marie & Pete’s tenancy status. Marie & Pete are properly documented tenants. Not acknowledging Marie’s tenancy status and to deny her ability to make rent payments is punitive.
4. END THE SURVEILLANCE and RESPECT TENANT PRIVACY
Plan A must remove all of the surveillance cameras from all areas of Park Beach Manor. It must permanently cease surveillance of tenants' movements and stop soliciting tenants’ personal information. Plan A must inform tenants of the identities of all Plan A staff and associates who live or operate in the building. All tenants deserve to live free of surveillance and harassment.
5. STOP THE HARASSMENT NOW
Plan A must put an end to the continuous communication, stop the emails and texts outside of business hours, and cease the threatening messages to its tenants. Tenants are entitled to live in peace and Plan A must agree to a protocol that includes an agreed upon process for how they communicate with tenants.
6. LEAVE OUR STUFF ALONE and RETURN PAT’s PAINTING
Plan A must stop threatening to remove tenants’ belongings from the building’s common areas. It must install secure bike parking in the parkade and ensure that sufficient storage areas are provided for all tenants’ belongings. Plan A must return Pat’s painting that was removed from the common area shortly after they bought the building.
7. STOP THE PLANNED RENT INCREASE
Plan A must cease its plans to apply for an additional rent increase for capital expenditure. Plan A has chosen to invest in 1925 Nelson St. It is unfair to place the financial burden for maintenance and upkeep of their investment onto the tenants.
8. APOLOGIZE
Plan A and Anoop Majithia must apologize to Park Beach Tenants for the way they have been treated. Majithia must acknowledge to his tenants that his behaviour has been unacceptable and offer to make amends.
