In case you missed it, this past Monday we donned our best polos and headed to the ritziest course in town to disrupt our landlord’s charity golf tournament. Supporters and tenants gathered outside the Nicola Wealth Invitational at Point Grey Golf & Country Club to rally against the destruction of our homes.

There were a few angry golfers there to greet us, having paid $4500 a ticket to sip wine and feel self-righteous in peace. We were told that we should feel ashamed as the event was held for “underprivileged kids.” We know the primary goal of these events is not to better the lives of children. If they cared about this, Nicola Wealth wouldn’t be trying to evict our children.

Charity events like the Nicola Wealth Invitational serve to promote a positive public image for developers and corporations while they enjoy tax credits for charitable donations.

Destroying affordable rentals and forcing tenants to pay much higher market rents takes money out of people’s futures, out of their retirements, their children’s schooling, and threatens their ability to live stable lives. Projects like this one provide a wealth transfer from working class to the wealthiest people in our society.

Nicola Wealth is focused on providing “wealth management and asset management services to affluent individuals, families, and institutions across Canada.” Many of their services cater to “ultra-high-net-worth” clients, with investments in the $20 million range and higher.

During the rally, Myron Manor Collective member Michael said, “Our landlord is a visionary of the finance industry, finding new ways to exponential profit by displacing children,” before presenting a “2026 Homelessness Creator” award for Nathan Ma, Nicola Wealth’s Director of Development. Nathan Ma was not present and so the award was left for him to pick up beside a Rolls-Royce parked on the golf green.

How’s Nicola Wealth going to claim to be a philanthropic organization while evicting seniors and young families?

Nicola Wealth deserves the kind of reputation that comes with what their capital is funding. The kind of reputation that comes with kicking out long term residents for what is essentially a 21-storey AirBnb.
