Broadway Plan First Meeting

Neighbourhood Power vs. the Broadway Plan

We as renters in Mount Pleasant ask: why must necessary investment in city infrastructure come at the expense of our homes?

Enter your info at the bottom of this page to register for our first meeting!

The meeting will be an opportunity for you to talk with fellow renters in your neighbourhood and strategize about how to fight evictions both locally and across the Broadway corridor. The Mount Pleasant Chapter of the Vancouver Tenants Union will also present background information about the new subway line to be built down Broadway and the necessary structures to build tenant power in our neighbourhoods.

We know from experience that with the creation of massive transit projects in our neighbourhoods comes a flood of speculation, wide-scale demolition and redevelopment, and ultimately, the displacement of working, low-income residents and unhoused people from the communities they call home. The City’s Broadway Plan is a comprehensive area plan along the Broadway corridor that will affect 25%* of all purpose-built rentals in Vancouver.

And what’s the City’s answer to these life-and-death questions from renters? More questionnaires, more surveys, an interactive website. Meanwhile, our homes are being targeted for demolition to make way for luxury condos.

We’ve had enough. We reject the City’s one-sided ‘consultations’ as an empty and placating gesture to manufacture consent on endless displacement. They know what renters need. It’s up to us to make sure the City falls in line.

WE DON’T NEED MORE CONSULTATION – WE NEED POWER

We as organized tenants in Mount Pleasant ask our neighbours in Commercial, Fairview and Kitsilano to join the fight in defending our homes from rampant speculation and redevelopment.
